Key Ingredients of an Exceptional Patio Winebar in Chicago, IL

Stepping into a wine bar can feel a bit like embarking on a treasure hunt. Sometimes, you might be caught off guard by a bad selection, a misguided theme, or, even worse, uninspiring wine. Add to that the fact that wine bars come in all shapes and sizes these days, from dim, abandoned spaces to bustling venues, and it makes wine bar hunting even more fun. Yet, when you stumble upon a gem like Nia-one that exceeds expectations and shines on multiple levels-it truly transforms your sipping and dining experience.

Here are some of the top qualities of an exceptional wine bar.

 Fresh Mediterranean Food Chicago, IL

The Wine

While it may seem obvious that a great wine list should be a standard feature, you'd be surprised by how many wine bars stumble on this essential element. A top-notch wine list is as carefully curated as an exhibit at the most popular museum in Chicago, IL, state - meticulously chosen and always diverse. It should allow you to explore wines from across the globe, showcase a variety of vintages, and include both well-known labels and hidden gems from afar.

 Mediterranean Dining Chicago, IL

Wine Bar Concept

A wine bar should have a captivating concept that draws people in. It's important to offer enough variety, including seasonal menu updates and special promotions. Whether it's the cozy atmosphere, the overall vibe, or the delicious food and wine pairings, all elements must work harmoniously together to create a memorable experience. At Nia Restaurant and Wine Bar, we're always rotating our wines and looking for the newest and most popular choices.

Knowledgeable Staff

A well-trained staff is essential for a quality wine bar. They should possess a solid understanding of the wines they serve and beyond. Familiarity with the regions and other similar wines is key. They don't need to be certified sommeliers, but they must be knowledgeable about the menus and wine lists. There's nothing more frustrating than inquiring about a restaurant's wine selection and being met with a vague response like, "We have white and red." Or worse, asking about different varietals and receiving a confused look in return.

 Healthy Mediterranean Food Chicago, IL

Proper Glassware

Here's an instance where size really does matter. Every wine has its own distinct flavor profile that you can experience at different points on your tongue and throat. As a result, the shape of a wine glass influences how each sip of wine interacts with your taste buds.

Mediterranean Cuisine Chicago, IL

Atmosphere

To create an inviting atmosphere in a patio wine bar, the lighting should be understated yet bright enough for patrons to appreciate the colors of each wine. The music needs to be at a volume that's enjoyable and can be heard over chatter but never loud enough to drown out the sounds of glasses clinking in celebration. The overall vibe should make everyone feel relaxed, welcome, and comfortable to minimize any feelings of tension or discomfort.

Youths under age 17 must be accompanied by a parent or supervising adult after 5 p.m. from Dec. 23 through Dec. 30 at Chicago Ridge Mall.

Lorraine Swanson, Patch Staff

CHICAGO RIDGE, IL — After Sunday’s incident when a “prank” cleared Chicago Ridge Mall shortly before closing, parents and teens under 17 are reminded that the mall’s youth supervision policy has been extended to cover the week of Dec. 23 through Dec., 30.

All visitors age 17 and under must be accompanied at all times by a parent or supervising adult at least age 21 or older after 5 p.m. The policy is intended to ensure that all shoppers enjoy a safe, pleasant and family-friendly shopping experience.

The same policy is currently in effect on Fridays and Saturdays. Unsupervised youth age 17 and under shopping before 5 p.m. on the weekends must be joined by an adult. Youths and adults must be able to provide proof of age. Those who fail to present ID will be asked to leave the mall. Proper identification includes a state-issued driver’s license or ID card, a passport, or a military ID. The identification must include a photograph, date of birth and be tamperproof.

One adult may accompany up to six youths. The supervising adult must be 21 or older (not the teens’ 18-year-old friend) must remain with the youths at all times. Adults are responsible for the youths’ behavior while accompanying them in the mall and ensure that they are following mall’s Code of Conduct.

Shoppers of all ages are reminded to mind their manners and refrain from obscene or profane language and other loud, disruptive behavior posing a safety threat to other guests. The code also prohibits gang attire from being worn inside the mall.

Find out what's happening in Oak Lawnfor free with the latest updates from Patch.

Mall employees under 17 may continue to work within their store during the hours with the youth supervision policy is in effect. If their shift ends during policy hours, employees must be prepared to show valid ID and proof of employment.

The Chicago Ridge Mall enacted the policy in 2014 after a fight broke out in the food court that sent hundreds of shoppers and teens on winter break running through the mall. What was thought to be gunshots actually turned out to be a restaurant employee banging pots and pans together to break up the melee.

Stuart Alan Rice, Age 92

Beloved husband of Ruth O’Brien and the late Marian Rice. Loving father of Barbara Rice, David Rice and the late Janet Rice. Dear grandfather of Joel (Emma) Rice and Rachel Rice.

“Stuart was Frank P. Hixon Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus in the Department of Chemistry and the James Franck Institute, and former dean of the Physical Sciences Division (1981-1995).

Stuart’s journey began with a bachelor's degree from Brooklyn College in 1952, followed by a PhD from Harvard University just three years later in 1955. While working as a Harvard Junior Fellow, splitting his time between Harvard and Yale, he launched his remarkably productive career at the University of Chicago in 1957.

For over six decades, Stuart was a driving force in physical chemistry, seamlessly blending theoretical and experimental research. His prolific output included over 700 papers exploring a vast landscape of topics: from excitons in crystals and liquids, radiationless molecular transitions, and effects of quantum chaos on excited molecules, to electrical properties of liquid metals, statistical mechanics of fluids, and the structure and dynamics of molecules adsorbed on surfaces. He delved into the electrical secrets of liquid metals, unraveled the statistical mechanics of fluids, and illuminated the intricate structure and dynamics of molecules clinging to surfaces. Stuart remained active and rigorous in his retirement and was working collaboratively with Norbert Scherer and his group up to his death.

Find out what's happening in Chicagofor free with the latest updates from Patch.

Stuart’s impact extended far beyond his own research. Not only had he been a scientific powerhouse, but he had also been an immensely thoughtful and helpful mentor, guiding and supporting colleagues at all stages of their careers. His commitment to fostering scientific growth earned him widespread recognition, including the prestigious Wolf Prize and the National Medal of Science, which cited him “for changing the very nature of modern physical chemistry through his research, teaching and writing, using imaginative approaches to both experiment and theory that have inspired a new generation of scientists.”

Stuart’s accolades also included four medals from the American Chemical Society (the Award in Pure Chemistry, the Baekland Award, the Debye Award, and the Hildebrand Award), as well as the Hirschfelder Prize in Theoretical Chemistry and the Centennial Medal of Harvard University. His commitment to public service was evident in his roles on advisory boards for federal agencies and his two decades-long membership on the Board of Directors of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists.

A fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Philosophical Society, Stuart shaped the field through his fifty years as editor of Advances in Chemical Physics. He also co-authored four books: Polyelectrolyte Solutions with Mitsuru Nagasawa, The Statistical Mechanics of Simple Liquids with Peter Gray, Optical Control of Molecular Dynamics with Meishan Zhao, and Physical Chemistry with R. Steven Berry and John Ross.

Stuart’s legacy at the University of Chicago includes leadership roles as director of the James Franck Institute, chair of the Department of Chemistry, and dean of the Physical Sciences Division. He personally mentored over one hundred graduate students, leaving an enduring mark on the scientific community.” - Ka Yee, Acting Dean, Physical Sciences Division.

Service Tuesday, 11AM at Congregation Rodfei Zedek, 5200 S. Hyde Park Blvd., Chicago, IL 60615. Interment Private.
